Hi, we're Vicky and Jason. Inside Yilan is our guide to Yilan County, on Taiwan's northeast coast, written for people planning a trip.
Our Yilan
We visit Yilan as tourists, and we visit often. We have never lived here, so we see Yilan the way you will: as visitors. The difference is that we are Taiwan locals, so the buses from Taipei, the train tickets and the small family restaurants are not a mystery to us.
And we know the locals to ask. When we want to know whether the boats to Guishan Island are running, which hot spring the locals use, or whether the mountain road is worth the drive today, we ask the people who live here. Insiders still. That is what this guide passes on to you.
Vicky
Vicky was born and raised in Tainan. She brings the local's view: how Taiwanese people actually travel, eat and plan a trip, and what to ask when the official page doesn't say.
Jason
Jason is the foreigner of the pair. He has lived in Taiwan for around a decade. He knows what confuses a first-time visitor, from booking a train to Yilan to reading a bus timetable, so when something needs explaining, that's Jason's job.
How we write this guide
Every fact on this site comes from an official source or established press, and every page says when we last checked it. Yilan changes with the weather: typhoons and heavy rain close trails and mountain roads, Guishan Island closes to visitors for the winter, and timetables shift. So we link the official pages and tell you to check before you go. We give the way to get to every place, by train, bus, scooter or taxi, because there is no metro here. And we'll always be honest about what's worth your time.
Welcome to Yilan. We're glad you're here.
