If a friend in Taipei asks us where to go for a weekend, Yilan is usually the answer. Take the bus through the Hsuehshan Tunnel or the train along the coast, and in about an hour you're among rice fields, hot springs and surf beaches. The one thing to plan around is the rain. Yilan is one of the wettest places in Taiwan, so pick your season and pack for it.
These pages cover the planning. The rest of the guide covers what to do once you're here.
