For a first trip without a car, we'd pick Jiaoxi or Luodong. Yilan's towns line up along the railway, north to south: Toucheng, Jiaoxi, Yilan City, Luodong and Su'ao. Each has a station, so the rule is simple. Pick the town nearest to what you most want to do, and stay within walking distance of its station or bus terminal.

Jiaoxi: the hot spring town
Best for a short break from Taipei, and the easy choice if the soak is the point. Jiaoxi (礁溪) is built around its hot springs, with hotels, public baths and foot baths close together in the town center. The buses from Taipei stop at Jiaoxi Transfer Station in the middle of town, and the train station is a short walk away. Evenings are quiet: there's a small night market, and that's about it. → Jiaoxi · Hot and cold springs · Where to eat in Jiaoxi
Yilan City: the county seat
Best for food, old streets and a central base. The county's main town has the station square with Jimmy Liao's picture-book sculptures, the Dongmen Night Market, and buses in every direction. Stay here if you want to eat well and move around by bus or train. → Yilan City · Where to eat in Yilan City
Luodong: the night market and the south
Best for evenings out, and for day trips south and inland. Luodong Night Market is a walk from the station, the National Center for Traditional Arts and the Dongshan River are a short ride away, and it is the nearest big town to Sanxing and the mountains. NightMarket.tw keeps the market's opening details and the nearest station. → Luodong · Sanxing and Datong · Where to eat in Luodong
Toucheng: the coast and the surf
Best for surfers, sea views and an early boat. Wai'ao beach is where Yilan surfs, and boats to Guishan Island leave from Wushi Harbor. It's quieter and more spread out than the towns to the south, so a car, a scooter or a bike helps. → Toucheng · Surfing at Wai'ao
Su'ao: cold springs and the harbor
Stay here for the cold springs, the seafood at Nanfang'ao, or an early start down the Suhua Highway to Hualien. → Su'ao and Nanfang'ao
B&Bs: how to tell a legal one
Yilan has a great many B&Bs (民宿, minsu), many of them out among the rice fields: the county counted 2,207 in 2025. Not all are legal, and the county fines the unlicensed ones, so check before you book:
- Look for the registration. A legal minsu must display its B&B registration certificate (民宿登記證) in the entrance hall and put the official B&B sign (民宿專用標識) on the outside of the building. Ask for the registration number when you book.
- Check it online. The Tourism Administration's Taiwan Stay (臺灣旅宿網) lists the legal hotels and B&Bs, with data from the county governments. Search by name or address. If it doesn't come up, ask the owner for the registration number and search again.
Good to know: the pretty rice-field B&Bs are often far from a station, with no bus nearby. Without a car, ask whether they pick up from the station before you book.

Hotels: our top 10 for solo travelers and couples
If the soak is the point, stay in Jiaoxi and book a room with its own hot spring tub. Eight of these ten have a hot spring tub in the room (at Yamagata Kaku, in some room types), and most are a short walk from Jiaoxi Station. Three are outside Jiaoxi, and each earns its place for a different reason: a night inside the Traditional Arts Center, a tall hot spring tower next to Luodong Station, and a calm, well-run hotel in Yilan City.
How we picked: every hotel here is on the Tourism Administration's register of licensed hotels, and each has at least one recognition you can check: a place in the MICHELIN Guide's hotel selection, a Tourism Administration star rating, or a high Google Maps score from thousands of guests (as listed in November 2026). Room rates in Jiaoxi swing a lot between a weekday and a holiday weekend, so we give a price tier rather than a price. Book on the hotel's own site or a major booking platform, and check what's included: many Jiaoxi rates come with breakfast, some with dinner.
Good to know: a Jiaoxi room with an in-room hot spring tub is the cheapest way to soak in private. It's the thing to look for in the room description, often written as 湯屋 or 溫泉浴池.
Splurge
Hotel Royal Chiaohsi (礁溪老爺酒店)
This is the classic Jiaoxi splurge, and the one we'd suggest for a couple's anniversary. It sits above the town on the road to Wufengqi Waterfall, so it's quieter and greener than the hotels in the center, with views over the Lanyang Plain. Even the standard rooms have their own hot spring tub, and there are two big shared baths, one open-air and one built like a cave. It's out of walking range of the station, but the hotel's free shuttle covers that.
- Area Jiaoxi, on the hillside toward Wufengqi. No. 69, Wufeng Road, Jiaoxi Township.
- Hot springs Private hot spring tub in the room; open-air and cave-style shared baths (from 07:00 or 08:00 to 22:00, depending on the season).
- Getting there Free shuttle for guests from Jiaoxi Station and Jiaoxi Transfer Station; book at least an hour ahead. The hotel also runs a paid shuttle from Taipei Main Station; book by 18:00 the day before.

MU Jiao Xi Hotel (礁溪寒沐酒店)
The newest five-star in Jiaoxi, and the one to pick if you want the luxury but don't want the shuttle. It's about five minutes on foot from the station. Every room has its own hot spring tub, and most have a terrace. Downstairs there are separate men's and women's nude baths, plus mixed pools with jets. It's big on families, so for a quiet soak, use the tub in your room.
- Area Jiaoxi town center. No. 1, Jiankang Road, Jiaoxi Township.
- Hot springs Private hot spring tub in every room; separate men's and women's nude baths (光之湯) and mixed pools with jets.

The Moment Hotel Yilan (煙波花時間 宜蘭傳藝)
No hot springs here, but it's in the MICHELIN Guide's hotel selection, and it's a night you won't get anywhere else. The rooms are low red-brick buildings inside the National Center for Traditional Arts, designed by Huang Sheng-yuan's studio, with ponds and covered walkways between them. After the day visitors leave, the hotel puts on evening shows and a lantern-lit walk along the old street. Pair it with a night in Jiaoxi if you want the soak too.
- Area Wujie, inside the National Center for Traditional Arts, south of Luodong. No. 201, Section 2, Wubin Road, Wujie Township.
- Hot springs None.
- Getting there About 15 minutes by taxi from Luodong Station, or the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Dongshan River line from the station's rear exit (about every 30 minutes). → Traditional Arts Center

Our pick for couples who want a bit of style without the five-star bill. Every room has a semi-open-air hot spring tub with a view, and the rooftop has an infinity pool facing Guishan Island, with outdoor films some evenings. It's about three minutes on foot from Jiaoxi Station, so you can step off the train and be in the water within the hour.
- Area Jiaoxi town center. 2F to 10F, No. 67, Wenquan Road, Jiaoxi Township.

Cuncyue Hot Spring Resort (村却國際溫泉酒店)
The hot spring hotel for people who'd rather be in Luodong. It's the tallest hotel in Yilan, 23 floors right beside the station on the east side, and more guests have rated it on Google Maps than any other hotel in the county. Rooms come with two tubs, one filled from the hot spring, and the upper floors look out over the plain to the sea. Luodong Night Market is about 1.2 km away, an easy walk after dinner.
- Area Luodong, east side of the station. No. 190, Zhandong Road, Luodong Township.

Yamagata Kaku Hotel & Spa (山形閣)
One of the closest hot spring hotels to the station, and one of the best rated in Jiaoxi. The look is Japanese, a nod to its ties with Yamagata in Japan, and the shared nude bath on the second floor is the draw. Several room types have a big hot spring tub of their own, so check the description before you book. A good one for a solo traveler: you can walk from the train in five minutes and soak in the shared bath.
- Area Jiaoxi town center. No. 187, Section 2, Zhongshan Road, Jiaoxi Township.
- Hot springs Hot spring tub in several room types (standard, standard twin and the Yamagata rooms and suite); shared nude bath on the 2nd floor.

Just Sleep Yilan Jiaoxi (捷絲旅宜蘭礁溪館)
Our value pick in Jiaoxi, and the one we'd send a solo traveler to. It's the budget brand of the Silks group, so the rooms are compact, but each of the 138 has its own semi-open-air hot spring tub. There's also a men's and a women's nude bath and an open-air bath (swimsuits on). Five minutes from the station.
- Area Jiaoxi town center. No. 8, Lane 24, Deyang Road, Jiaoxi Township.

The Walden Yilan (悅川酒店)
No hot springs, but a four-star hotel at a budget price and a good base if you're here to eat and explore rather than soak. It's a quiet hotel named for Thoreau's Walden, on the northern edge of Yilan City, with bikes to borrow for the flat lanes around town. It's a bus ride or a short taxi from the station, so it suits people who don't mind that.
- Area Yilan City, north side. No. 123, Section 5, Zhongshan Road, Yilan City.

B&Bs and Airbnb-style stays: our top 10
If you want the Yilan that people come back for, book a minsu: a family-run B&B, often a house in the rice fields with the owners living downstairs and breakfast on the table in the morning. Every one of these ten is a registered minsu, because a legal one has met the county's building and fire-safety rules and must carry liability insurance. The county fines unlicensed lodging, and a listing that looks the same on Airbnb may not be legal.
Legal minsu are often bookable on Airbnb and Booking.com as well as directly. Look for the registration number in the listing (it reads 宜蘭縣民宿 and a number), then search the name on Taiwan Stay. No number, or a number that doesn't match the name and address, means keep looking.
How we picked: every minsu here holds the Tourism Administration's Good Host (好客民宿) mark, and seven of them won its first Good Host Gold Award in 2024, out of 103 winners nationwide. We then checked guest ratings on Google Maps and the official rates. We leaned toward places that work for two people or one, and toward hot spring rooms in Jiaoxi where they exist. Room rates change with the season and the day of the week, so we give a tier, not a price. One thing to know before you start: most minsu price by the room, so a solo traveler usually pays the double rate, and many weekend nights go to groups booking the whole house.
Good to know: minsu are small, often three to five rooms, and the owners run them alone. Book by phone or LINE if the site offers it, expect to pay a deposit by bank transfer, and tell them your arrival time. Most don't put out disposable toiletries any more, so pack your own toothbrush.
Splurge
Taiori (大漁日和)
This is the one to book if the hot spring is the point. Every room at Taiori has its own hinoki wood tub filled with Jiaoxi spring water, set upstairs by a terrace looking over the rice fields, with the bedroom and a tatami corner below. The other half of the reputation is dinner: the owners built the place around fresh fish from the Yilan coast, served Japanese style, and it won the Gold Award for food. Book early, because rooms open two months ahead and go fast.
- Area Deyang, Jiaoxi. No. 29, Lane 195, Qilidan Road, Jiaoxi Township (宜蘭縣礁溪鄉奇立丹路195巷29號)
- Hot springs Yes: a private hinoki hot spring tub in every room
- Getting there Train or bus to Jiaoxi, then a short taxi ride; it's a 20 to 30 minute walk from Jiaoxi Station
- Price Splurge. Choose bed and breakfast, or dinner, bed and breakfast (checked November 2026)

- Recognised by Tourism Administration Good Host B&B, Good Host Gold Award 2024 (food); 4.6 from 618 reviews on Google Maps, as listed in November 2026
- Good to know Rooms take two to four (the largest, five). No solo bookings: the owners ask for at least two adults per room, for safety in the bath. The largest room takes no children under 7. 30% deposit by bank transfer (overseas guests can ask for PayPal), the rest in cash at check-in. Check-in 4pm to 9pm, by 7pm on the dinner plan; check-out 11am. No pets. Bookings open on the 1st of each month for the month after next. English and Japanese on request.
