Things to do

Night markets

Luodong is the big one, open from mid-afternoon to midnight. Dongmen in Yilan City is smaller, cheaper and a few minutes from the station.

If you only do one night market, make it Luodong. It's the bigger of Yilan's two everyday markets, and it's where most of the county's famous snacks are together on a few streets. Staying in Yilan City? Then Dongmen is a quick, local dinner a short walk from the station. Bring cash to both.

Luodong Night Market

Luodong Night Market (羅東夜市) wraps around Zhongshan Park in the middle of Luodong, on Minsheng, Minquan, Gongyuan and Xingdong Roads. It's the one we'd send a first-timer to, and the one locals will point you to if you ask.

  • Hours Every day, 15:00 to 00:00 (stalls keep their own hours, and many open from about 16:00 or 17:00)
  • Address Around Zhongshan Park, Luodong
  • Getting there TRA Train to Luodong Station, then walk to the park in the town center
  • Pay Cash

What to eat

Five stalls worth finding. The hours below were reported in 2025, and stalls change them, so check before you queue.

  • Angelica lamb soup: A Zao Bo (阿灶伯當歸羊肉湯), No. 265, Minquan Road, 16:00 to 01:00, closed Wednesday. A warm bowl on a cold, wet Yilan night, and they do stinky tofu too.
  • Gao zha and bu rou: Xiao Chun (小春糕渣卜肉), No. 100, Gongyuan Road, for the two snacks you won't find outside Yilan: fried savory custard (糕渣) and fried pork strips (卜肉). Open 16:00 to 23:00, to midnight on Friday and Saturday. → What gao zha is
  • Soup dumplings: Chang Wei Xian (嚐味鮮湯包), stall 1108 on Minquan Road, with scallions piled on top, 17:30 to 23:00.
  • Sanxing scallion pancake: Qi Qiao Wei (七巧味三星蔥多餅) on Gongyuan Road, hand-rolled and stuffed with Sanxing scallions, from 16:30 (17:00 on Friday and Saturday) to 21:00. It closes earlier than the rest, so make it an early stop.
  • Stinky tofu fries: Tang Shu Shu (堂薯薯臭薯條), stall 1085 on Gongyuan Road: stinky tofu cut like fries, with a choice of sauces. An easy way in if you're nervous about stinky tofu.

Yilan Dongmen Night Market

Dongmen Night Market (東門夜市) sits under and beside the Donggang overpass (東港橋) in Yilan City, mostly along Shenghou Street (聖後街). It's smaller and more local than Luodong. Follow the smoke: corn grilled over an open flame is what draws the crowds.

  • Hours Every evening; there are no official hours, and guides give from about 17:00 to midnight
  • Address Shenghou Street, under the Donggang overpass, Yilan City
  • Getting there TRA Train to Yilan Station, then a short walk
  • Pay Cash

Moving: the Donggang overpass has to come down for the railway elevation project between Yilan and Luodong, so the market will have to move. As of April 28, 2026, PTS reported, Taiwan Railway had not agreed to the vendors' plan to reopen under the new viaduct, over the risk of open flames, and no date was set. For now it's still trading where it is.

What to eat

  • Du hao shao (嘟好燒): a century-old Yilan snack of fried batter around red bean and flower bean filling, back since August 2026 with the fourth generation of the family. Find it beside the night market parking lot on Saturdays and Sundays only, 16:30 to 21:00.
  • Thick rice noodle soup: A Mao (阿茂米粉羹) on Shenghou Street makes it the Yilan way, with coarse local rice noodles and a broth of shiitake and small dried fish.

Tips

  • Go early. Locals do. The famous stalls get long queues, especially on weekends, and the small Dongmen stalls start to pack up before midnight.
  • Check the day off. Some stalls take a weekday off (A Zao Bo closes on Wednesday), so look at the Google Maps listing before you go.
  • Staying the night? Luodong eats just as well by day. → Breakfast and lunch in Luodong
  • Out from Taipei for the evening? Check the last bus or train back before you start eating, not after. → Getting back to Taipei
