If you sleep in Luodong, don't save all your eating for the evening. The town's best meals are breakfast and lunch at small shops that have fed the same streets for decades, and most of them close by mid-afternoon. Start with a bowl of savory rice noodles before 13:00, have lunch across from the Forestry Culture Park, and walk to the night market for dinner. This page is the daytime half; the stalls are on our night market guide.
These are family shops, so their hours move. We give them as the press reported them, with the date; check the Google Maps listing on the day before you cross town. Bring cash. Yilan isn't in the MICHELIN Guide, so you won't find stars or Bib Gourmand plates here: what we picked are shops with a long history or a steady local following, written up by Taiwan's food press.
Breakfast
Zhang Xiu Xiong rice noodles (張秀雄米苔目)
The Luodong breakfast to get up for. Zhang Xiu Xiong (張秀雄米苔目) is the rice noodle shop many Luodong people grew up eating at, long known simply as the nameless mi tai mu by the park. It has moved from its old spot by the night market to Tianjin Road, and the regulars followed. Order a bowl of savory mi tai mu in pork bone broth and a plate from the cold cuts, and make sure that plate includes the fen chang (粉腸), the pork sausage the shop is known for. If you've never had mi tai mu, our guide to Yilan dishes explains it. It sells out, so go early.

A Gu dry noodles (阿姑乾麵)

Luodong Charcoal Shaobing (羅東碳烤燒餅)
Not a sit-down breakfast, but the line outside tells you it's worth the stop. Luodong Charcoal Shaobing (羅東碳烤燒餅店) has been baking in a charcoal oven for over 20 years. Get a pepper bun (胡椒餅), full of peppery minced pork, and a few of the small salty shaobing (鹹酥餅) filled with Sanxing scallions. Regulars buy ten at a time, and baking times vary by day, so you can call ahead to reserve.

Lunch: pork soup by the timber yard
Linchang Rou Geng (林場肉羹)
Linchang Rou Geng (林場肉羹) has been serving pork thick soup across the road from the old Luodong timber yard since 1967, and it's the easy lunch before or after the park. The pork is marinated, coated in sweet potato starch and cooked in a pork bone broth with bamboo shoots and black vinegar. Have it as soup, or over noodles, rice noodles, flat rice noodles or rice. Be warned: opinions on it are split, and some locals find it sweet and touristy. It still fills up, and weekend queues are long.

A sit-down meal: Yilan banquet dishes
Yi Xin Yuan (一鑫園)
Yilan's best-known dishes, like xi lu rou and gao zha, come from the banquet table, and you usually need a big group to order them. At Yi Xin Yuan (一鑫園), a short walk from the night market, a chef with over 20 years of banquet catering serves them in small portions, so two people can eat the way a banquet table would. Order xi lu rou noodles (西魯肉麵), the oyster braised pork rice (蚵仔滷肉飯), and the shaomai, made to order with a whole shrimp or abalone inside, so expect a short wait. Weekend lunches fill up.

Snacks and sweets
Luodong Red Bean Tangyuan (羅東紅豆湯圓)
Three things on the menu, and that's the point. Luodong Red Bean Tangyuan (羅東紅豆湯圓) started in the early 1960s, and the same family still runs it: red bean soup, sweet rice ball soup, or both together. The rice is Taiwanese, ground fresh each morning, and the beans are sweetened only with cane sugar syrup. It's by the old Luodong Market, near the night market, and a warm bowl is the right end to a cold, wet evening.
- Hours 09:30 to 21:30 (as reported in October 2026)
- Address No. 180, Section 3, Zhongshan Road, Luodong (羅東鎮中山路三段180號)
- Getting there TRA Luodong Station, then a walk toward the night market
Beimen Mung Bean Milk, Luodong (北門綠豆沙牛乳大王 羅東店)
On the same road as the pork soup, Beimen Mung Bean Milk (北門綠豆沙牛乳大王) is known for one drink, mung bean paste blended with milk (綠豆沙牛奶), and it's the one to order. Its days are short, so plan around them.
- Hours Thursday to Saturday 10:30 to 17:00; Sunday 10:45 to 16:30; closed Monday to Wednesday (as reported in October 2026)
- Address No. 179, Zhongzheng North Road, Luodong (羅東鎮中正北路179號)
- Getting there TRA Luodong Station, then a walk or a short taxi ride; it's on the same road as the Forestry Culture Park
Cai Ji Stinky Tofu (財記臭豆腐)
If you'd rather not fight the night market crowds for stinky tofu, Cai Ji (財記臭豆腐) fries it from mid-afternoon in its own shop. Order the crispy stinky tofu (脆皮臭豆腐); the cheese version (起司堡臭豆腐) is the house novelty.
- Hours 14:00 to 22:00, closed Tuesday (as reported in October 2026)
- Address No. 110, Gongzheng Road, Luodong (羅東鎮公正路110號)

Good to know: for coffee, the Forestry Culture Park has a Starbucks in its old buildings, open 08:00 to 20:00. We couldn't confirm that Luodong's independent cafés from older press write-ups are still open, so we've left them out for now.
A day of eating in Luodong
Here's how we'd put it together for a friend staying the night. Rice noodles at Zhang Xiu Xiong before 09:00. A pepper bun to carry. The Forestry Culture Park in the late morning, with pork soup across the road for lunch and a mung bean milk on the way back if it's Thursday to Sunday. A rest at the hotel, then the night market from about 17:00, and red bean soup to finish. If you're out from Taipei for the day, flip it: lunch here, dinner at the market, and check your last train first. → A day trip from Taipei
