Things to do

National Center for Traditional Arts

A recreated old Taiwanese street on the Dongshan River, full of crafts, snacks and shows. Give it half a day, take the bus from Luodong, and stay on for the night market.

This is the easy half day: good with kids, good in light rain, and right on the bus line from Luodong. The Yilan park of the National Center for Traditional Arts (國立傳統藝術中心 宜蘭傳藝園區) is a 24-hectare park on the Dongshan River in Wujie, just outside Luodong, open since 2004. Its buildings are modeled on a Taiwanese town of the 1930s and 1940s, from the temple at its center to the shophouse streets, and there are folk crafts and performances through the year. The government runs the arts programme. The shops, food and day-to-day running are contracted out, currently to PX Mart's foundation (全聯善美的文化藝術基金會).

What's inside

  • The old streets: shophouses selling crafts, old-style snacks and creative goods. The best part is the workshops, around a hundred kinds, where you make something to take home.
  • Wenchang Temple (文昌祠), the temple at the heart of the park, where visitors come to pray for blessings.
  • Performances: resident shows (駐園演出) in the park, and bigger programmes for the festivals of the year.
  • Exhibitions of traditional crafts and architecture, which change through the year.
  • Boats on the Dongshan River, linking the park with the Dongshan River Water Park and the Dongshan River Ecological Ark.
  • Costume hire, for photos in period dress on the old street.

What's on changes a lot, so look at the park's seasonal events and exhibitions pages before you go.
