Yilan on a rainy day

Rain is part of a Yilan trip, so plan for it. A museum, a distillery and a hot spring make a good wet day.

Rain in Yilan is common, most of all when the northeast monsoon blows in from autumn (see the best time to visit). Don't let it cancel the trip. A drizzly day is a good day for the indoor sights, and a hot spring feels better in the rain anyway. Leave the trails, the boats and the mountain roads for another day.

Typhoon days are different: in a typhoon warning, stay put. Trains on the Yilan line can be cancelled, buses through the Hsuehshan Tunnel may stop, and sights close (the Lanyang Museum closes on typhoon days when government offices close). Check the weather and Taiwan Railway's notices before you travel. → Trains to Yilan

Plan A: Toucheng and Jiaoxi, by train

Morning: the Lanyang Museum. The Lanyang Museum (蘭陽博物館) in Toucheng is our first choice on a wet day: two or three hours inside, following the county from the mountains to the sea. It's open 09:00 to 17:00 and closed on Wednesdays. Tickets are NT$100 for the permanent exhibition or NT$200 for the whole museum. It's a 20-minute walk from Toucheng Station, so if it's pouring, take a taxi or the local bus 131 to the Lanyang Museum stop. Leave your umbrella at the door. → Lanyang Museum

Afternoon: a hot spring. Take the local train to Jiaoxi, about 8 minutes. Jiaoxi's hot spring water comes up in the middle of town, so you're never far from a bath. Tangwei Furo (湯圍風呂), the public bath at Tangweigou Hot Spring Park (湯圍溝溫泉公園), with men and women apart, costs NT$80 (08:00 to 12:20 and 13:00 to 21:30, and ask at the counter whether swimsuits are allowed), or book a private room at a hotel bath house and stay dry from start to finish. → Hot springs · Jiaoxi

Plan B: Yilan City and Luodong

Morning: whisky. The Kavalan distillery (金車噶瑪蘭威士忌酒廠) in Yuanshan is open every day from 09:00 to 18:00. Walk past the casks and stills on the free tour, then blend your own bottle in the Whisky Lab or just have a dram at the bar. Entry is NT$200, and you get it back to spend inside. It's a taxi ride from Yilan Station (宜蘭車站). → Visiting the Kavalan distillery

Afternoon: the Traditional Arts Center. Take the train to Luodong, then the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Dongshan River Line (Green 21) G21 from Luodong Transfer Station to the National Center for Traditional Arts (宜蘭傳藝園區), open 09:00 to 18:00, NT$150. Much of the park is outdoor streets, so bring an umbrella. You can still fill a wet afternoon in its shops and workshops (around a hundred kinds of hands-on crafts), its exhibition hall and the show. In November 2026 there's a glove-puppet show every day at 13:00, plus 15:30 Friday to Sunday. → Traditional Arts Center · What's on

Evening. Luodong Night Market (羅東夜市) opens every day, rain or not, but the stalls are out in the street. Go early and eat at a shop with seats. → Night markets
